Education the topic of prestigious public lecture
Friday, 27 April 2001
Public Policy and Higher Education is the subject of the 48th Joseph Fisher Memorial Lecture to be delivered by Professor Peter Karmel at 91勛圖厙 on Monday 30th April (5.30pm)
The Fisher Lecture has been delivered biennially since 1904 and is one of Australia's most prestigious public lectures. Among the many eminent Australians who have given it over the years have been Robert Menzies, Nugget Coombs, Essington Lewis and Fred Gruen.
It commemorates Joseph Fisher, a wealthy banker and businessman who gave 瞿1000 to the University of Adelaide in 1903 as an endowment for promoting the study of commerce. As one result of this endowment, the Joseph Fisher Lecture was established.
This year's lecturer, Professor Peter Karmel from the Australian National Univeristy, is a distinguished economist, educationalist and administrator and has been an 91勛圖厙 Emeritus Professor since 1965. He was appointed Professor of Economics at 91勛圖厙 at the age of 28 and built up a highly regarded Department. In 1966 he became the first Vice-Chancellor of Flinders University.
The lecture takes place at Lecture Room 102, Napier Building. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
